University
Place is a small community located west of Tacoma, with a population
of 30,500. It is contiguous to the city of Tacoma, the town of Fircrest,
the Puget Sound and Lakewood on the south. The community is located
45 minutes south of Seattle. The area is a desirable suburban residential
district and is served by several expanding shopping and service
centers located within its boundaries. The area is within an easy
commute of ocean beaches and the Cascade Mountains.

Attend a District Board of Directors Meeting
The
community is invited in to district programs and services
School facilities are open to community members- to register to
voete, attend an event, swim, play sports or picnic, attend a meeting
or program, visit a clssroom or serve as a volunteer.
During the regular school day, visitors must report to the school
office as they arrive. To respect the instructional work, a parent/guardian
who wants to visit a classroom is asked to obtain prior approval
of the teacher and principal.
Voter registration forms are available at school offices and the
district office.
Residents may use facilities when schools are not in session. Phone
the school principal for policies and procedures.
In The Swim- The pool is open to the community for public
swims, lap swims, water aerobics and swim lessons. Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays during the school year, public swims are 7:05-8:30 PM.
Adult lap swims and water aerobics are 6:20-7:05 PM. Half-hour swim
lessons for children 4 1/2 years and older are 6:30-8:30 PM, Tuesdays
and Thursdays.
The summer schedule, announced in late spring, includes daily lessons
in two week sessions, public swims, adult lap swims, water aerobics,
springboard diving, and lifeguard training classes. Phone the pool,

Community Usage- UPSD Cooperates with the City of University
Place, UP Parks, and others in making its building and fields available
for regular use by community groups and sports teams.
Enrichment- After school opportunities for students to explore
interests; in cooperation with school PTAs/PTSAs.
Summer School- Classes in math and reading, English as a
second language, science, study skills, computer techniques and
drivers' training; and other academic and enrichment options.
Latchkey- Before and after school program for grade 1-6 students
in cooperation with University Place Latchkey Association.
Driver Education- Before and after school or Saturday lessons
for students who are 15 by the first day of class.
Board
invites community to attend its meetings
Communty members are welcome at district Board of Directors meetings.
Meetings are scheduled for 6:30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays
of each month, except for July, November and December, when the
2nd meeting of the month is not held. Call the district office for
the location of the meeting (566-5600). They are held either at
the Educational Service Center, or at one of our district schools.
Agenda copies are available at the Educational Service Center on
Mondays prior to meetings. Phone the board secretary about scheduling
items on the agenda or speaking at a board meeting.
The elected five-member board adopts district policies, approves
the education program and budget, adopts the strategic plan, employs
and evaluates the superintendent, and employs other personnel. The
board informs University Place residents of district needs, authorizes
levies and bond issues to meet them, and reports on progress toward
district goals.
